Buchanan’s Store

Located in Manson, North Carolina, this small, country store established in 1878 is just around the corner from beautiful Kerr Lake, which spans over 850 miles of shoreline across the border of North Carolina and Virginia. The store sign reads: “If we ain’t got it, you don’t need it!” Gas pumps greet you out front, along with 8 ice chests (I could only fit 4 in my painting.)

As you walk over the slanted wooden porch covered in yard decor, pool noodles and more, into the creaky planked inside with one cashier by the door and often a line of people, you’ll find a grill with hot food offerings, an attended ice cream bar with local flavors and your choice of cone, fishing tackle, clothing apparel, travel souvenirs, puzzles, local artwork, and everything in between. An oasis, if you will!

Artist’s note: We love stopping here for ice cream and fishing tackle when we’re in town. Last time, I finally ran to the other side of the road to snap some reference photos so I could illustrate it. I’ve shared those below. Notecards and stickers available HERE.
